In the United Kingdom 35% of total plastic consumption is used for packaging. Some form of plastic is found in nearly half of all packaged goods.

Production and use of plastic has a number of environmental impacts. Large quantities of fossil fuels are needed as both a raw material and during the manufacturing process. But perhaps more significantly, plastics are non-degradable. It is unknown how long it takes for plastics to breakdown when landfilled. Perhaps it will take hundreds of years – at the moment no-one knows for certain as plastics haven’t existed for long enough for any to completely degrade.

Plastic packaging, disposed of soon after purchase, is taking up a large amount of vital landfill space -- this is a growing concern.
